A huge part of Uber’s IPO event in 2019 was for the company to focus on the drivers and couriers that made it all possible. One way we wanted to say thanks was to create a personalized video for every driver and courier on the platform - over 4 million at the time.
Along with my teammate Joel Bowers and the talented illustration team we created these two short animations. In addition to animation, I was largely responsible for creating the templates and working with the engineering team to make these scalable across tons of languages. This was definitely one of the more technical challenges I had during my time at Uber!
In total, the engineering team used our template to export around 16 million video assets (including the various formats needed for different platforms).
The reception was great - drivers were greeted by the videos in-app and were sharing them across Twitter and other social media outlets throughout the IPO.
